What is the Festival of Lessons & Carols?

The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a celebration that has brightened Christmas with its harmonious blend of scripture and song for over a century. This festival, with its classical beauty and dignified charm, resonates with families and those who hold dear the values of truth, beauty, and goodness.

Originating in 1918 at King's College, Cambridge, the Festival of Lessons and Carols was designed to enrich the Advent experience with a narrative of the Christmas story through readings and music. In this service, we listen to nine Scripture lessons which recount the Fall, the promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation, and the Great Commission to preach the Good News. Each lesson is followed by a carol or other song that reflects on the lesson's message and a brief prayer. It's a simple, yet profound format that eloquently captures the essence of the season.

This festival is more than a holiday event; it's a reminder of God's enduring love. It offers a moment of peace and contemplation, inviting us to reflect on the deeper meanings of the season.

We invite you to join us for an evening of joy and reflection Tuesday, December 19th as our students perform Chesterton Academy of St. Louis' first Festival of Lessons & Carols under the direction of Mr. Jeffrey Wisniewski at Little Flower Catholic Church in Richmond Heights. Reception to follow.
