Unscripted: Fostering Confidence and Creativity through Competitive Improv

It teaches you to see ordinary things as extraordinary, wonderful and ridiculous just as G.K. Chesterton could do within his writings.Maria Romine, Chesterton Academy Improv Coach

A Reflection by Mrs. Romine:

I wanted to start an Improv Club for our students so that they could learn some necessary skills that would assist them in acting for drama productions in their future as an attendee of Chesterton Academy. Improv teaches more than just “making it up on the spot”, which is what it is known for providing.

The “Yes, And” of Improv teaches participants how to listen to what is really being said so that you can add on. It teaches you to support your fellow performers so they do not feel that they are alone in the vulnerable situation of being in front of an audience.

Improv takes the skills and talents that you already have and enhances it to bring joy and laughter to all that encounter it. It teaches you to embrace your mistakes because in Improv they are considered gifts that enhance the scene in a new way…an unexpected way.

It teaches you to see ordinary things as extraordinary, wonderful and ridiculous just as G.K. Chesterton could do within his writings.

Student Testimonies:

"The improv classes here at Chesterton Academy of St. Louis have produced a positive effect on my life. Improv has improved my acting abilities and also increased my comfort with performing in front of crowds. It has also seemed to elevate my listening and communication skills to a bit of a higher level while also increasing my confidence–especially while interacting with others. Overall, these classes have been very exciting, and I look forward to continuing to learn more about improv. I am very grateful to Mrs. Romine, who teaches these classes, for all she has done."

"I have always enjoyed acting and Improv Club has really improved my acting skills. This different kind of performing has taken my love of acting to new levels. Because of the atmosphere at Chesterton Academy, I am not afraid to look or feel silly in front of the other students. That is the spirit of comedy! I am so glad that others share my love of acting and bringing people joy!"
