The Feast of St. Louis
1214 - 1270
Feast Day: August 25
St. Louis, King of France, reigned from 1226 until his death in 1270. He was a devoted husband, father of eleven, holy crusader, and faithful Catholic who strove to serve God with his whole heart, mind, and soul.
He was a great patron of the arts, commissioning timeless works of architecture such as Sainte Chapelle and the monastery of Royaumont, as well as works of literature, including one of the first great encyclopedias. St. Louis served the poor, brought much needed reforms to the justice system, and built hospitals, including one for prostitutes and one for the blind. He was canonized in 1297.
One of the great treasures left to us by St. Louis is his moving letter of fatherly advice to his son and successor, Phillip III. To celebrate his patronage, leading up to the feast, we are pulling a different piece of advice each day for reflection. Enjoy!
